Tympanometry

Tympanometry is a diagnostic test used to evaluate the function of the eardrum and middle ear. It helps detect issues such as fluid buildup, eardrum damage, or hearing loss.

In particular, tympanometry provides valuable insights for conditions like Ménière’s disease and Endolymphatic Hydrops. In our clinic, this test is used to measure middle ear pressure, detect the presence of fluid in the middle ear, identify mobility issues in the ossicular chain, and assess problems related to middle ear air pressure and Eustachian tube function.

Tympanometry is a method included in hearing tests, specifically designed to measure the functionality of the eardrum and middle ear.

How Tympanometry Works

During tympanometry, a small probe containing a microphone and an air pressure pump is placed in the ear canal. The pump increases and decreases air pressure to measure the eardrum’s movement. The patient wears the probe, and the pump adjusts the air pressure several times, causing changes in the eardrum’s movement.

The microphone detects these vibrations and records them on a graph called a tympanogram.

This test can help identify issues such as fluid buildup in the middle ear, eardrum damage, or hearing loss. Tympanometry is also used to monitor treatment progress for ear infections and to ensure the proper adjustment of hearing aids.

Steps of Tympanometry

The procedure for tympanometry includes the following steps:

1. Preparation:

The patient sits or lies down comfortably in a quiet testing room.

2. Insertion of the Probe:

The hearing specialist places a probe into the ear canal. The probe contains a small pump to adjust air pressure inside the ear, which is necessary to measure the movement of the eardrum.

3. Measurement:

  • The microphone within the probe records the vibrations of the eardrum caused by changes in air pressure.
  • These vibrations are displayed on a graph, which reflects the mobility of the eardrum and the air pressure within the middle ear.

4. Repetition for the Other Ear:

The test is repeated for the other ear to ensure both ears are evaluated.

Comfort and Duration

Tympanometry is typically painless, but some individuals may feel slight discomfort in the ear during the test. The test may also temporarily affect hearing due to changes in air pressure.

The entire procedure takes approximately 5–10 minutes, and results are available immediately.

Tympanometry is a crucial tool in diagnosing and monitoring conditions like middle ear infections, hearing loss, and Eustachian tube dysfunction, ensuring effective treatment and care.
